EV charging and solar in Aberdeenshire
Aberdeenshire miles are long. An EV makes sense here when you can charge at home without treating every evening as a peak-rate event. A wall charger on its own still buys electricity from the grid. A charger plus solar plus a battery is how those miles start to come off your own roof.
Austen’s Energy already fits EV chargers for homes and businesses in Aberdeenshire. Because Austen is a registered electrician, the charger, the consumer unit and a grid-connected solar system can be one design instead of three quotes that do not fit together.
Charge from the roof, not only from the fuse
Daytime charging is the easy win if the car is on the drive. Most commuting cars are not. That is why storage matters. Generate at noon, sit in the battery, discharge into the car after work — or use a cheap overnight window when the roof is quiet. Hybrid inverters from the likes of Sigenergy are built with that kind of load in mind; a Fox all-in-one can do the same job on a simpler house.
If you skip the battery, you will still save when you can plug in at lunch. You will not save much on a dark commute.
The board is the bottleneck more often than the driveway
A 7 kW charger on a tired single-phase board, plus a heat pump, plus an immersion, is how you get lights that dip and an electrician called out in a panic. We look at diversity, tails and earthing before we pick a charger current. Sometimes the right answer is a slightly slower charge and a battery that stops the house fighting the car. Sometimes the board has to be upgraded. That is not upselling; it is the law of physics and BS 7671.
Grants, workplaces and farms
Domestic and commercial chargers have different paperwork and different load profiles. Farmyards with several vehicles, or a small workplace car park, need a design that will not flatten the rest of the site. Tell us how many vehicles and whether they sit during the day. We will tell you whether solar should come first, the charger first, or both in one visit.
Do it as one installer
The messy version is a charger company, a solar company and a spark who has never seen the inverter. The tidy version is one registered electrician who already knows how we mount home batteries and how Aberdeenshire DNOs like generation declared. That is the version we sell.
Photos of the proposed charger wall, the board, and the roof are enough to start. Send an enquiry.
Cold, dark and still worth doing
Winter charging in Aberdeenshire is mostly grid electricity. That does not make solar pointless; it makes the annual picture what matters. Summer miles and cheap stored units still erase a lot of the year’s charging cost. The charger should be smart enough to follow a tariff and a battery state, not a dumb 32 A switch that fights the heat pump at 6pm.
If you already have a charger and hate the bill, we can often add solar and storage around it rather than ripping the wall box out. Mention the make on the form. Cable routes and spare ways in the board decide whether that is a neat afternoon or a proper rewire.
