Grid-connected solar in Aberdeenshire

If you are on the mains in Aberdeenshire, grid-connected solar is usually the most useful way to cut a rising electricity bill. Panels make power during the day. A hybrid inverter puts what you can use into the house first. A home battery stores the rest for the evening. Surplus can be exported, subject to the rules of your Distribution Network Operator.

Plenty of companies will sell you panels. Fewer will take responsibility for the electrical work that actually connects that system to a live Scottish supply. That matters for consumer units, earthing, isolation, G98/G99 notifications and the kind of tidy, certifiable job a lender or a buildings insurer expects to see.

What “grid-connected” actually means

A grid-connected (or grid-tied) system stays linked to the public network. When the sun is weak, you still have mains. When generation exceeds what you are using, export and battery charging become the tools that stop cheap solar being wasted. Compare that with a fully off-grid power system, which has to stand on its own with batteries and, often, a generator. Farms and remote steadings in North Aberdeenshire still need that approach — we have done that work — but most homes around Aberdeen, Inverurie, Ellon and Stonehaven are better served by a grid-tied design.

If you already have solar and want to store cheap overnight units or soak up more of your own generation, a grid-connected battery / EESS can be specified without replacing the whole roof.

Why an electrician on the install changes the outcome

Grid-tied solar is not just a roof product. It lands in your consumer unit, your earth arrangement, and the DNO’s connection process. A registered electrician can:

  • Assess the existing board, tails and earthing before anyone orders panels
  • Fit hybrid inverters, generation meters and isolation so the system can be isolated safely
  • Prepare G98 (typically smaller systems) or G99 applications where the network needs them
  • Integrate an EV charger later without a second firm inventing a workaround

That is the difference between a kit that “makes power” and a system you can live with for fifteen years.
