Value home batteries: Growatt, Sunsynk and Dyness — what to check

Posted in Batteries

Search for home batteries in Scotland and you will meet a wall of Chinese brands at tempting prices. Growatt, Sunsynk, Dyness, Pylontech, Sofar — the list rotates with whoever is advertising this month. Some of that kit is perfectly serviceable. Some of it is a spreadsheet saving that you pay for later in firmware, spares and silence from the warranty desk.

Austen’s Energy will specify a value brand when it is the right commercial fit. We will not pretend it is always the same as Fox ESS or Sigenergy. This is how we decide.

What “value” should mean

Lower cost per usable kWh, from a manufacturer with UK-available parts and a hybrid inverter we are willing to commission. Not the cheapest listing on a marketplace, and not a battery that only talks to an app based in another timezone with no English support.

  • Growatt and Sofar — widely used hybrids. Fine on many grid-tied houses if the firmware path is current and the battery is a matched high-voltage stack.
  • Sunsynk — common on farms and hybrid/off-grid jobs. Powerful when commissioned properly; messy when treated as a plug-in appliance.
  • Dyness and Pylontech — modular racks behind a separate inverter. Useful if you may add capacity in two years. You still need someone who understands the inverter pairing.

Checks we will not skip

Cycle life at the depth of discharge you will actually use. Low-temperature performance in a Scottish garage. Whether the fire and electrical documentation is real. Who holds spare modules in the UK. What happens if the brand’s local distributor disappears — we have all watched that movie.

Grid-connected installs still need a registered electrician. A bargain battery does not reduce the need for a competent consumer-unit job, G98/G99 and isolation. If a quote is cheap because those items are missing, it is not cheap.

When we push you up the range instead

Family homes that want a single cabinet, app support, and a firm that will still attend in 2029 usually land on Fox or Sigenergy. Workshops, rentals, and some farm outbuildings can take a value stack if the client understands the trade. We would rather lose a job than fit a box we will not come back to.

Read the broader home battery storage page, then tell us your budget and your risk appetite in the same sentence. That is more useful than sending six competing PDFs.

Ask for a spec, not a shopping list

Include whether the site is grid-tied or off-grid, single or three-phase, and whether backup lighting during a cut is essential. We will come back with Fox, Sigenergy, or a named value combination we are prepared to install — or we will tell you to spend the money on the roof and the board first. Request a quote.

Import risk, explained without the scare quotes

Chinese manufacturing is not a slur. Fox and Sigenergy are in that supply chain too. The risk is not nationality; it is a thin UK entity, an inverter-battery pairing that was never tested together, and a warranty that requires you to ship a 50 kg module to a warehouse that no longer answers. We keep a short list of value combinations we have commissioned and would commission again. Everything else is a maybe, not a website add-to-cart.

If your budget only works on a value stack, say the number. We can often get a farm or a rental to a sensible spec without pretending it is the same as a flagship cabinet in a new-build utility room.
