Why a registered electrician matters for grid-tied solar

Scotland does not have a shortage of people who will talk about solar. It has a shortage of people who will stand behind the bit that actually joins those panels to a live house. Grid-tied solar is an electrical installation. If the person on site cannot sign off a consumer unit, you do not have a complete job — you have a kit and a hope.

What grid-tied solar asks of the house

A grid-connected system has to play nicely with the public network. Generation has to be isolated. Earthing has to be right. The Distribution Network Operator needs the right notification — typically G98 for smaller systems, G99 where the export or inverter size crosses a threshold. None of that is optional paperwork. It is how you avoid a dangerous install and a conversation with the network you did not want.

Roofers can put modules on slates. Only a competent electrician should decide how those modules land in your board, how the hybrid inverter is fused, and how a battery is isolated in a fault. If you later add an EV charger, that same board is the constraint. Doing it once, properly, is cheaper than paying two trades to argue about whose cable is whose.

Why “solar companies” still call an electrician anyway

Many solar sales models split the job: one firm sells, a labour-only team fits the roof, a local spark is booked for the last afternoon. You can see the joins. Generation clamps in the wrong place. No space left for a battery. A board that needed replacing six years ago, left as-is because it was “not in the quote”.

When the electrician is the installer, the quote includes the board, the DNO path and the battery from the start. That is how we work. It is also why we will sometimes say no: if the supply, the roof or the usage does not justify the kit, a registered electrician should be the person who tells you that, not a commission sheet.

Grid-tied is still the default for most Scottish homes

Off-grid is brilliant when you have no viable mains, or when a farm wants independence. We publish that work in our case studies. For a house in Westhill, Banchory or Peterhead that already has a decent supply, staying on the grid and adding solar plus home battery storage is usually the bill-cutting move. You keep the network for January. You still get to use your own kilowatt-hours after dark.

What to send when you enquire

A recent bill, a photo of the consumer unit with the cover off if you can do that safely, and a couple of roof shots. Tell us if you have a heat pump or an EV on the way. We will come back with a straight view on grid-tied solar, batteries, and whether a visit is worth your time.

Aberdeenshire examples, not brochure theory

A grid-tied cottage outside Inverurie with a heat pump is a different drawing from a workshop in Ellon that runs welders at noon. The electrician’s job is to notice that before the panels are ordered. We have had clients arrive with a quote for a huge array and a tiny board, and clients who wanted to island a house that sits ten metres from a perfectly adequate pole. Both are expensive if you only find out on install day. A registered electrician on the survey is how those jobs get redesigned — or politely declined — while it is still cheap to change your mind.
